I promised you a big reveal, and HERE IT IS!

Educating and empowering South Africans of all ages is something I’m very passionate about. Investing is another big interest of mine, but I feel there aren’t enough of us out there who understand investing, or utilise it to its full potential (maybe you think it’s too complicated or ‘is only for people with loads of money’)– and it’s to our detriment. When I was only 19 and started earning a bit of money I was encouraged to try and commit to putting at least something away every month. It all started with an investment account. Investing in shares is actually not difficult at all – it just takes a plunge – and I have gone out and found the easiest way to get a foot in the door so you can trust that doing it this was is the best start to something much greater.

As I mentioned earlier this week, I recently learned that of the 53 million South Africans, only 280 000 invest in shares on the JSE. That’s less than half a percent of South Africans. That’s terrible and maybe why we see South Africans in so much debt. It’s widely known that us South Africans aren’t among the best savers (of money) in the world, and as soon as we get cash, we find (what we think are) great ways to spend it (flashy cars, a new watch, a cool phone). Immediately. Not the best idea for our future.

Let’s change that. Let’s start a revolution. Let’s embark on a journey to drive a better culture of investment and saving in South Africa – starting with you and me! I know it sounds intimidating but there are ways to start off nice and easy with a SMALL sum of money. Imagine if you could tell your friends/family that your money grows while theirs sits in a bank and LOSES value.

Kicking off today, I’m issuing you with a challenge, where you’ll be rewarded big time (by me and by your future self).

The challenge is simple:

1) Head on over to https://www.easyequities.co.za/?affiliateid=7&affiliatekey=1uKN%2bkpYBmPcz1Yl92Yc1mFp4NHSaelNH6xC8UAuYwP8d4mK%2b%2f68dQ%3d%3d (it’s VITAL that use use THIS link as that’s the only way to know that you signed up with me)

2) Sign up for an EasyEquities account (It’ll take less than five minutes. I’ve done it!)

3) Once you’ve signed up, FICA your account (using the easy and safe submission process.)

4) Deposit your R50 to start investing (their payment system is 100% secure, so don’t be scared about inserting your payment details. I’ve done it myself and my details are safe.)

5) Once you’ve signed up, take a selfie with your confirmation email/EasyEquities profile page in the background (but be sure NOT to have your personal account details visible) and tag @EasyEquities @DaniloAcquisto #EasyInvesting.

To make life even simpler (and more visual), here are a few 2min videos to help you get the ball rolling:

- How to register an account:

- Why on earth should I start investing:

- How do I FICA?

There are LOADS more videos on their Youtube Channel

I promised you rewards, now what are they?

1) If you take up this challenge with me signing up with the link above (between 24 September and 27 October) you stand to win an exclusive one-on-one day out with me. My treat. We’ll head out to one of the coolest spots in your city and spend the morning or afternoon (the winner can decide) hanging out in good company, eating great food, and chatting all things fun, fulfilling, investment and awesome. Heck, we might even snap a few selfies, and there’ll be a few more surprises in store for you.

2) We’ll have some really cool spot prizes along the way between now and 27 October, where anyone who accepts this challenge and starts investing, will stand to win.

3) If you don’t win the one-on-one experience with me this time, you’ll at least have made the first move to taking your financial future into your own hands.

As “thanks” for joining me on this quest, I might even throw in a few more surprises along the way… *wink wink*

In the coming weeks, I’ll be with you on the investment journey and will be sharing my top investment tips and some secrets from some of SA’s biggest investors with you on social media and right here on my site.

Now all that’s left for you to do is decide: are you up for the challenge?

If so, let’s get investing! #Operation1K

A MINI Adventure

April 29th, 2015 Posted by Opinion Piece, Uncategorized 1 comment

Recently I have been feeling quite overwhelmed by the opportunities that had presented themselves to me (no pun intended). Life has been a rollercoaster, work has been manic, my church work has all come to a climax, my service work has required my undivided attention and in the process I have been struggling to stay afloat. In a moment of prayer, I felt so strongly that I needed to take a break, even just for a weekend, to learn to appreciate again the many blessings that I had and to be reminded that what was going on in my life was actually such a blessing and not a curse. The sad news was that I just couldn’t find a gap anywhere in my schedule… And so I stole THE most epic adventure EVER one Friday night!!

IMG_0503IMG_0588

One Friday afternoon I called up a few friends and we decided we were going to go on an adventure for the evening. We weren’t sure where the night would take us but we sure as hell knew that we all needed a break from this very serious life we had all been living. We wanted something new, something beautiful and a chance to just be away.

Sure as nuts we decided to take a drive out to one of the most beautiful parts of the Cape, Noordhoek. We had no idea what we would be doing there, and so the unexpected journey began.

Let’s just start by saying driving that Ou Kaapse Weg road during sunset in the brand new Mini Cooper we were in, was just absolutely spectacular. That was a beautiful getaway in and of itself. We arrived at Café Roux because we knew that they always have something awesome to showcase and on this night there was a band I had never heard of called John Wizards playing. They were, for lack of better words, strange, but I so enjoyed the sound… And little did I know they actually had quite a large following!

Here is one of their songs called Muizenberg:

This one is a live performance of Lusaka By Night:

Anyway, after getting into the groove at Café Roux and having a completely overpriced burger, it was time to go and explore the area. We took a quick drive down the road and spotted what seemed to be an abandoned horse show-jumping ground. The stars were out, the moon was bright so the 4 of us jumped the rail, scurried through the dark field to find swings hanging from the trees. We swung in the dark, laughed, got dizzy, fell… And it was time to sit in the open field, fall back and look at the stars in the quiet night sky. My cousin, Sven, decided this wasn’t enough after a while and so the ghost stories began to flow… We laughed, got goose bumps, stared some more at the nights sky and all its beauty appreciating Gods creation until sanity kicked in and we realised that it was time we snapped back to reality and head home before we were found trespassing. I so hope the owner of the farm doesn’t read this – Sorry Mr farmer, your swings were great!

IMG_0506IMG_0589

We all piled back into the Mini and were on our way back home over those beautiful hills. The mood in the car was almost silent as we all looked in awe of how beautiful Cape Town was. It made me realise that in the rat race I had been living, I forgot to take a step back and see that in fact, my life is about far more than the successes of my work and that for me to truly find fruit in my work it is a necessity (and not a nice-to-have) to take a break and appreciate exactly where you are NOW instead of focusing on where you always think you still need to go. With all the violence we are seeing in our news, it is hard to sometimes recognise goodness and so it is important to TAKE goodness, for if we also spread hatred and sadness, where will people experience joy from?… Thank you to Hayely, Dwight and my cousin Sven for joining me on this epically unexpected journey. I am glad I got to share some joy with you! Let’s do it again soon.

To Mini Auto Atlantic, if it weren’t for the car you guys gave me, this adventure would never have been inspired. The car is INCREDIBLE and one day I hope to not only have the honour of driving it, but of owning it. The new Mini Cooper is such a legend – I am in love!! It has all the bells and whistles, turbo-charged engine flashy lights, epic interior and more. You can check out these cool cats here: http://www.mini-autoatlantic.co.za

My Freak Finger Accident

March 13th, 2015 Posted by News, Uncategorized 6 comments

I must warn you that if you are the type of person that looks away at some of the scenes in Grey’s Anatomy, then this is NOT the blog for you – GRAPHIC IMAGES!

As some of you may have seen on social media, on Tuesday 10 March 2015 on a regular morning I arrived at gym with my gym trainer as I do most mornings and began my session as per normal. About half way through my session, we had finished doing bench press with free weights and I was on my first set of incline press. After my 12 reps I attempted to drop the weights at my side so I could sit up… And this is where the freak accident happened.

I was unaware that next to me were lying the weights from my previous set. As I let go of the 20kg weights my right ring finger got slammed between the weights I let go and the weights that were lying next to me – crushing the tip of my finger. At first it just felt like I had slammed my finger in the door. That is until I decided to look at the finger… This is what I saw:

image3image4 image5

Gross right?! Well naturally we rushed off to hospital to have it checked out. I didn’t scream or anything but I remember clearly praying out loud and feeling ill and faint in the parking lot. After a big mistake (ending up at some dodgy hospital) my brother and his fiancé transferred me to Mediclinic in Gardens. They were INCREDIBLE – brilliant nurses and doctors.

image7 image6

Later that afternoon I was admitted into surgery where the surgeon had to rebuild my nail bed, align the tip of my bone, remove my nail and re sew my nail back on as a temporary splint. It was a short 1-hour surgery and probably looks much worse than it was, but DAMN it was an ordeal. Can you believe that he put stitches through my nail to keep it in place?!

3 days later I had to go visit the surgeon again to check the wound. Check out the stitches:

image1 image2

This was probably the most painful part. Looks like he did a great job, but still so gruesome!

Anyway, in the process I have learned how hard it is to brush your teeth with your left hand, how hard it is to wash your left armpit with your left hand, how hard driving is with 1 hand, how frustrating typing is and how impossible it is to write with my left hand.

I must give a big thank you to my family, my gym trainer (Dan), my surgeon and all the nurses (who all were so kind and wanted to say hello because of my days on Hectic Nine-9) and to YOU for the incredible support. I literally have been dealing with the best and felt so loved!

Now I’m on my 6-week road to recovery… Prayers welcome!

There Comes a Time When You Need a Push In Order To FLY

November 24th, 2014 Posted by Inspiration, News 9 comments

In September 2010 a young, wild and curious me took a chance at something new… Four years later it is time for me to take that journey again. This time with so much more experience and understanding. Yes, it’s time for me to open the doors to a new Mlungu for Hectic Nine-9.

I really cannot believe that my journey on Hectic Nine-9 has spanned over 4 years. Those years have seen me graduate with my degree from UCT, present the live show, work as a studio producer for live television, start a company, take on my very own radio show and serve the board of a fantastic organisation. In many ways I have shocked myself by the possibilities one can achieve when you are passionate about something. I do, however, feel that I am starting to outgrow my own shoes and I am itching to take that next dangerous step to allowing me to fly towards even greater success.

33710_10150092691292166_350466_n59280_1409445356434_3931765_n222712_145457092193714_3914395_n

So yes, on 15 December this year I will be hosting my last show on Hectic Nine-9. I did, however, feel as though I owed you all an explanation and to hopefully make you realise that in no way is my decision to leave based on any anger or fear.

So why AM I leaving?

You know, I wish there was a simple answer for this question. One of the main reasons that I am leaving is that for anybody to be in one place for too long is unhealthy. Hectic Nine-9 has taught me so much in my four years and has seen me grow from presenter into producer and beyond. I do, however, feel like my opportunities for personal growth are starting to deplete and because I am so passionate about growth and development, I would not be living up to my message if I hung around for safety’s sake – it’s time that I spread my wings and experience a new challenge in my life.

10685564_10154689579005523_2496076548778111588_n         526449_10151303277477992_1315336061_n

To reject the fallacy, no there is nothing that I am leaving Hectic Nine-9 specifically for. Rather it’s an opportunity for me to rediscover who I want to be (the me God wants me to be) and to take the time to explore more opportunities in my field.

There are plenty more reasons I could go in to for making this decision but I feel it would not be appropriate on the web. I do want you to know that I am extremely happy and excited for the future.

1518765_10152130831449246_1682655524_o259271_10150346278890620_4995981_o207539_216085011739355_5053308_n

Let me elaborate… I am 23 years old and have experienced more work opportunities in my 4 years of TV then most people experience in their entire lives. God has blessed me like that. I do, however, feel as though it would be irresponsible of me to hang on to my opportunities for much longer and to not let other people have the same opportunities I have had. In addition to this, I have a massive fear of being stagnant. I never want to feel like I arrive at work and am learning nothing. In order for me to keep growing as a person, it’s important that I experience new things and take big risks in the hope that it comes with rewards of personal growth. I have big dreams, South Africa, and cannot achieve them by standing in one place. I may have nothing in the immediate pipeline for the future but I cannot create any opportunities while I am still with HN9. I need to experiment, fail, experiment again and fail again… I need to be the best!

So what’s next?

As it stands, I am going to continue with my radio show on Good Hope FM. On the work front, I am also freelancing as a Development Producer in Cape Town. Other than that I am on the hunt for the next big challenge in my life. This might see me work on more television shows (or behind the scenes), it might see me move to Johannesburg, it might see me start a business or 2, it might see me start a YouTube channel or 2, it might even see me move to the UK to explore how places like the BBC do television and specifically how they incorporate digital as an entertainment medium into the way people consume media.

Work aside, I do feel like God is calling me to be involved in more service. I will continue to serve as a director on the board of Life Choices, I will be taking a new position as a youth leader at my parish, the entrepreneur in me is going to be working on a few digital platforms I am wanting to develop – one is an innovative look at religion and specifically Catholicism, and the other is in insurance – using online video content to promote saving in our youth. Other than that I will still be assisting Hectic Nine-9 as a freelance studio producer into the new year.

64733_776445572391642_1309585749275189386_n 310382_10150315895952992_202662319_n222907_10150278490065620_5037122_n

What has this journey taught me so far?

Wow! I don’t think there is a way that you can speak to 3 million youth on a daily basis and not get affected. HN9 has been my absolute life for the past 4 years and one of the most amazing experiences I have seen was something I saw on Facebook recently. When I had started on the show in 2010 I had accepted a series of fans on my private Facebook account (as I didn’t think I would be there for long). These kids were only 15 or so at the time. Recently I have seen all their posts of glory as they are starting to be accepted into universities and winning accolades. I cannot believe that I have journeyed with our youth during some of the toughest years of anyones life. How proud I feel that our viewers are achieving so much with their lives and inspiring their peers.

555760_105107872958416_1337728294_n    554578_10150884433910620_1341374611_n    72604_10151327141997992_751326963_n

Another lesson I have learned is that people do business with people. Not once have I received a vote of thanks or message of praise from a fan purely because of the fact that I am on TV. Rather, I was receiving votes of thanks and messages of praise because of how everyone that watches the show on a daily basis connected deeply with something personal they knew about me. It has been such an important lesson to remember – that people aren’t stupid. They will know if you are being fake with them, so be real ALWAYS! And be the authentic you always – bruises and all.

Never lose hope! If there is one thing that the youth of South Africa should be proud of, it’s their ability to never lose hope. Every day you interact with us on air, I am overwhelmed by your desire to learn, grow and become the person you want to be. It has inspired me to keep going in spite of the many challenges I face on a daily basis.

This isn’t goodbye!

You and I will get a chance to say our final goodbyes on the 15th of December so I have decided to not speak for too long here. Just know that I am not abandoning you. I will always have a special place in my heart for the youth of my beloved country. One day when you are all entrepreneurs, famous TV stars, dancers, actors, lawyers, doctors or even fisherman and policeman, I hope you will send me a message so I can revel in your success with you. Continue to shine positivity and light to your peers and loved ones and never forget that you are not alone in whatever circumstance you may find yourself in. God has a great big plan and you are exactly where you are meant to be. Smile!

Danilo-Acquisto-6982                      Danilo-Acquisto-6861                      Danilo Acquisto 03

I wanted to leave you with a message I received on Facebook in the hope that it will inspire you to use your life to grow other people around you:

Dear Danilo

It has taken me a whole lot of courage to write to you this message but here goes nothing…

I am telling you this story of mine because I believe sharing something personal with someone brings some sort of healing. I was born with a severe heart muscle condition and recently I’ve been told that I will only live for the next year or two maximum. Seems like a very short time left isn’t it? But each day I have is a gift and grateful to still be here and I always remember that God has my life in His hands and has the final say. When I watch you present, its like you speak to my heart, I felt a sense of peace that came over me. I believe that God was blessing me through YOU and I want to say Thank You for being that blessing in my life. I can’t even put into words the joy and peace I got from you.

You encourages me to let my faith keep me going even in this situation I am in. Thank You for always sharing your wisdom, it really reflects on what a kind and gentle heart you have. You are an amazing person Danilo, beautiful inside and out and I pray that God may continue to bless you in everything you do.

I have grown to love you as this God-Fearing man so Thank You for who you are and I will always be a fan in this lifetime and in the next.

If heaven can’t wait to have me then I can’t wait to tell heaven about you.

Love always”

Lots of love #DANcers and I know we will see each other on your screens again soon! Please keep supporting me the way you have been and follow me on this digital journey as I try and bring South Africa one step closer to the modern era of digital TV.

The Power of Introverts

September 17th, 2014 Posted by Inspiration 7 comments

So all too often I get called a loud mouth… I am the typical example of what might be termed an extrovert. I thrive off being the centre of attention, being loud and feeding off people.

It has always been the viewpoint that people like me are the best to have in a company – we are innovative, able to sell, we contribute to society…

But today I just want to paint another viewpoint. Today I realised the power of introverts. I also realised how dangerous it can be for an extrovert to overshadow an introvert. The video I have attached is awesome! So much to learn from it. I wish more companies and teachers would watch it! Quiet people aren’t strange – they are highly intelligent and take a while to process information but when they do, the results are mind-blowing!

So learn to understand yourself better and realise you DO have a unique role to play. Work to those strengths.

Introverts ROCK and here’s why:

If you are an introvert and liked this, please share it with your friends! Also, comments welcome

Ciao for now!

Don’t Get Comfortable – Things Are About To Change

July 8th, 2014 Posted by Opinion Piece 4 comments

The other day one of my Twitter followers asked me whether I was leaving Hectic Nine-9 because they saw a picture of me in the control room that was captioned “Danilo Acquisto is studio producing today #BehindTheScenes”  instead of presenting and this sparked a MUCH bigger debate and I thought it warranted a blog post…

I want to contextualise that this was not just an isolated incident. Let’s have a look at a conversation I had with a teen who attends church with me and is part of a program called Life Teen (of which I am a leader):

Me: So dude, I am very interested to know what it is that you want to do with your life after school?

Him: Well I love music and sound so I was thinking of studying sound engineering and starting my own radio station… Who knows I could start the next Metro FM!

Most of you must be thinking “well what’s wrong with that?! He sounds ambitious” so let me explain what the problem is here…

I have had the opportunity of chatting to SO many young people in my life and trust me when I say I get LOADS of different answers when I ask the question about their futures. But what always seems to surprise me is that very few young people in South Africa look to the future in order to set themselves up for success. The reason I am concerned about the guy from my church wanting to start a radio station is that by the time he gets to University and wants to start with the company (and which he has dedicated his time and many years of thought), technology would have moved so fast that by then we would all be listening to online radio – there would be no place for another radio station – imagine that disappointment. Think about how fast your phone has developed – the work place develops as fast and if you can’t keep up you will fall behind. The scary thing is that our schools don’t teach us that and we get sucked into the mindset of law, doctors, accountants etc and no one is looking to what is still to come. There is maturity in holding on for something greater that is to come.

So, why do I, Danilo Acquisto, choose to do production AND presenting for Hectic Nine-9?! The answer is simple – I know I still have a LONG way ahead of me in my working career and if I don’t keep up with where the industry is going and keep developing myself and learning new skills then I will miss the band wagon. Remember I started that small online magazine? The reason behind that was to pre-empt the move of traditional publication to the online space and to familiarise myself with how the online space operates so when it does become a trend, I know what I am doing and can keep up. Hence why I am now learning about production and working on a new company which will deal primarily with online video production… All because I KNOW that will be the future. If I chose to just be a presenter for normal TV, eventually I would have missed the trend and would need to catch up and learn about online which will take too much time. I rather choose to up skill myself now in preparation.

What’s the message here?

My message to you is to try and stop looking at what CURRENTLY exists and look to what WILL exist in the near future and begin asking the right questions at school and doing research on the future so that when that wave does crash, you are ready to ride it and make a success of yourself. Did you know that Google and Microsoft and many other big companies have a department solely dedicated to inventing the future?! How are YOU going to be a part of the future if you are young and choose to dwell on the present…

Online IS the future… It’s just up to you whether you choose to learn about it now or later when it is too late.

Here is a TEDTalk I found to encourage new innovative thinking in the present:

Anyway that’s enough ranting from me… I would love to hear some feedback. Please pop all your comments below. Maybe I am being too aggressive and naive? Let me know

Ciao for now,

Danilo Acquisto
